What is Metal Rollforming?

According to the Metal Construction Association (MCA), rollforming is defined as:

“A continuous bending operation in which a strip of metal, typically coiled steel or aluminum, is passed through consecutive sets of rolls, or stands, each performing only an incremental part of the bend until the desired cross-section profile is obtained. Portable roll forming is ideal for producing parts with long lengths or in large quantities and are designed so they can be moved easily to various locations or job sites.”

Metal Rollforming is the manufacturing process of shaping (bending etc.) sheet metal and coils, into the finished shapes that are used in construction. Rollforming is a cold process in that it does not require the metal to be heating first, like many forms of fabrication. Rollforming tends to create less waste compared to other methods, less material in the scrap pile means more product you can sell.

Using rollforming instead of extrusion allows for much thinner material to be used and even sharper angles to be obtained – and you can use metal that has already been painted, so you get a finished product that is ready to go right away. Whether you need open shapes or a closed profile, rollforming can allow you to modify parts in a more efficient way – even allowing for multiple processes to be accomplished in the same run. From construction, to automotive, and even appliances and shelving, rollforming can be used for a variety of purposes and customized for each to provide the precision you need. Tolerances can be kept well under 1mm, depending on the speed you run the machine, and the profile depth you need to achieve. When they say these machines are precise, they mean it.

Having your own metal rollformer can allow you to do short runs of specific sizes and shapes, as well as pieces that would be difficult and costly to transport, not to mention the incredible time savings of having them made right there in your own shop, or better yet – smack dab on location. Imagine being able to modify the parts you need now, on site, the cost savings add up fast. Fill more orders in less time, get more work done faster, and just make more money for your work. Step up your productivity with a metal rollforming machine of your own and start reaping the benefits now.
